What is a migration map?

A migration map is a geographic visualization showing where your ancestors lived and how they moved between places across generations. It connects birthplaces, residences, and emigration routes into an animated journey — a way to see your family's history not as names and dates but as movement across the world.

Why Migration Map matters

Geography tells stories charts don't

The route from Ireland to Boston in 1847. The move from Sicily to Argentina in 1921. The quiet multi-generation migration from one town to the next. Patterns you'd never notice in a table.

Animated, chronological

Paths draw in time order. Watch your family spread across decades and continents as an animation — not a static map with arrows.

Filter by branch or era

Focus on one branch, one generation, or one century. See which ancestors stayed in one place their whole lives and which made huge moves.

Handles historical place names

Enter places as they were named at the time — Prussia, Bohemia, Ottoman Empire. Historical names resolve to the right coordinates.

How it works

  1. 1

    Enter places in your tree

Birthplaces, residences, death locations, any life event with a place. The more geographic data you have, the more detailed the map becomes.

  2. 2

    Generate the map

Open Migration Map and let it animate. Routes draw chronologically — watch your family move across decades and continents in real time.

  3. 3

    Explore by generation

Filter to a specific branch, a specific generation, or a specific era. See which ancestors stayed put and which made big moves.

Why MyLegacySpace

No other genealogy platform animates migration paths the way we do. Ancestry shows you a static map with dots. We draw your family's journey across the world in time — the way a documentary would.

Questions about Migration Map

What is a migration map?
A migration map is a geographic visualization that shows where your ancestors lived and how they moved across generations. MyLegacySpace draws animated routes between birthplaces, residences, and death locations — turning the places in your family tree into a visible journey across the world.
What plan includes the Migration Map?
Migration Map is included on the Legacy Pro plan ($9.99/month). Generating the map requires place-name geocoding and animation rendering, so it sits at the Pro tier.
How does the map know where my ancestors lived?
It uses the places you've entered in your tree — birthplace, death place, and any life events with locations. The more places you fill in, the richer and more accurate the map gets. Locations are geocoded to coordinates automatically.
Can I share the migration map?
Yes. Take a screenshot of the map for social sharing, or include it as part of a Story Scroll you share with family. The animated map itself lives inside your account on Legacy Pro.
What if a historical place name has changed?
Enter the name as it was at the time — "Prussia," "Bohemia," "Ottoman Empire." We also accept modern names and common synonyms. If a place fails to geocode, you can manually set the coordinates.
Does the map show only ancestors, or descendants too?
Both. Turn on descendant paths to trace how your family spread outward across the world from a common origin — useful for seeing diaspora patterns in your own tree.
