Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about family trees, time-capsule messages, memorial pages, AI photo restoration, privacy, and pricing.

Getting Started

What is MyLegacySpace?
MyLegacySpace is a digital platform for preserving your family's story. Build an interactive family tree, restore old photos with AI, create memorial pages for loved ones, and schedule time-capsule messages that unlock on birthdays, milestones, or when your family needs them most — designed to capture what was, share what is, and send what will be.
Do I need an account to view a memorial page or family tree?
No. Public memorial pages and public family member profiles can be viewed by anyone with the link — no sign-up required. Private trees and family-only content need an account and an invitation from the owner.
How do I invite family members?
Once you sign up and start your tree, you can send invite links to relatives by email. They can claim their own profile within your tree, add their own memories and photos, and optionally build out their own branches. You control who can view and edit what.
Is there a mobile app?
MyLegacySpace works beautifully in any modern mobile browser. A dedicated native app is on our roadmap. For now, you can save the site to your home screen on iOS or Android for an app-like experience.

Family Trees

How do I build my family tree?
Start with yourself, then add parents, grandparents, and other relatives one at a time. Each person gets their own profile with photos, stories, and life events. You can also import an existing tree from Ancestry, MyHeritage, or FamilySearch via a GEDCOM file and have hundreds of ancestors added in one click.
What view options does the family tree offer?
Three views are included: a fan chart that shows ancestors radiating outward in a beautiful semicircle, an ancestor line for traditional top-down layout, and an hourglass view that shows both ancestors and descendants at once. You can switch between views at any time without losing data.
Can I import my existing family tree from Ancestry or MyHeritage?
Yes. Export a GEDCOM file from Ancestry, MyHeritage, FamilySearch, or any other genealogy platform and import it into MyLegacySpace in one click. Your tree, relationships, and life events transfer over. You can also export your MyLegacySpace tree back to GEDCOM anytime — your data belongs to you.
How many people can be in my tree?
There is no hard limit on the number of people in your family tree on any plan. Storage limits apply to photos, videos, and documents — the Free plan includes 2GB, Family 15GB, and Legacy Pro has unlimited storage.
Can I connect to relatives who have their own MyLegacySpace tree?
Yes, through Legacy Links on the Family plan or higher. When your tree shares ancestors with another tree on the platform, we can identify the match and let both families opt in to connect branches — turning two separate trees into one shared history.

Future Messages & Time Capsules

Can I leave messages for my family after I'm gone?
Yes. Record video, audio, or written messages and schedule them to unlock on any future date or milestone — a 16th birthday, a wedding, a grandchild's first day of school, or simply "after I'm gone." Your words reach them when they need them most. This is the feature that makes MyLegacySpace genuinely different from every other family history tool.
What is a time capsule message?
A time capsule message is a written, audio, or video recording you create today and schedule to unlock in the future. Unlike traditional letters, time capsules unlock automatically on the date or milestone you choose — a specific birthday, a wedding, a holiday, or after a triggering event such as a reported passing.
How many future messages can I create?
The Free plan includes 5 future messages total. The Family plan includes 10 per month, and Legacy Pro includes 20 per month. Messages already scheduled never count against a new month's allowance once created.
Can I record video messages or only written ones?
Both. You can record video directly in your browser, upload existing videos, record audio-only messages, or write text. All formats can be scheduled the same way — and you can attach photos or documents to any of them.
What triggers a message to unlock?
You choose. Options include a specific calendar date, a recipient's birthday or milestone age, a family event like a wedding or graduation, or a "death-triggered" unlock that releases messages after your passing is verified by a trusted contact.

Memorial Pages

Can I create a memorial page for a loved one — for free?
Yes. Every MyLegacySpace account can create beautiful memorial pages with photo slideshows, guestbooks, lit candles, and a custom URL you can share. The same profile transitions gracefully from a living family member's page to a memorial when the time comes, keeping all of their stories in one place.
What goes on a memorial page?
Photo galleries, video tributes, a lit-candle animation, a guestbook where visitors can leave messages, biographical details, a timeline of life events, favorite songs, and a custom URL to share. Legacy Pro adds custom memorial URLs like mylegacyspace.ai/memorial/jane-doe.
Can I transition a living profile to a memorial page?
Yes, and this is a feature unique to MyLegacySpace. When a family member passes, their profile — with all the photos, stories, and time-capsule messages they built during their lifetime — becomes a memorial page automatically. Nothing is lost in the transition.
How do I let visitors know about a memorial page?
Every memorial page has its own shareable URL, social preview image, and QR code. You can link it from an obituary, print the QR code on a memorial program or headstone, or share the URL directly by email or social media.

AI Photo Restoration

Can I restore old family photos with AI?
Yes. Upload faded, torn, or damaged family photos and our AI restores them — repairing damage and colorizing black-and-white originals. Importantly, we do not alter faces. Other AI photo tools hallucinate different facial features on group photos; we stick to honest restoration. Free accounts get 3 restorations; paid plans include more.
Will the AI change facial features in group photos?
No. We deliberately chose not to include face-enhancement models that rewrite facial features — those models hallucinate completely different faces on group photos, which is unacceptable for family history. Our pipeline focuses on damage repair and colorization while preserving the real faces of your ancestors.
How many photo restorations are included per month?
Free plan: 3 restorations total. Family plan: 10 per month. Legacy Pro: unlimited. Restoration is a compute-intensive process, so monthly limits help us keep prices fair.

Profiles & Customization

Can I customize my profile page?
Yes. Every profile supports themes, background choices, a personal song, a custom status or mood, a short bio, and a photo gallery. Think of it as a modern, respectful take on MySpace-style profile customization — personal, warm, and unmistakably yours.
Can I add a song to my profile or memorial page?
Yes. Search for any song on Spotify and embed it directly on your profile or memorial page. Visitors can play it with one click. The feature is included on every plan.

Privacy & Security

Is my family data private?
Yes. Your family tree is private by default. Every profile and photo has individual visibility controls — private, family-only, friends, or public — and you choose exactly what is shared. We never sell your data, and memorial pages are only public if you explicitly make them so.
Who can see my family tree?
Only people you explicitly invite. Each profile and photo also has its own visibility setting — so you can share a specific memorial publicly while keeping the rest of the tree private, or share certain photos only with immediate family.
Do you sell my data?
No. We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data, family tree information, photos, or messages with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes. Our business model is subscriptions — your data is never the product.
What happens to my data if I cancel my subscription?
Your account and data remain on your current plan's features until the end of your paid period, then your account downgrades to Free — existing content stays accessible within Free plan limits. You can also export your full tree as a GEDCOM file and download your photos at any time, cancellation or not.

Pricing & Plans

Is MyLegacySpace free?
Yes. The Free plan includes a family tree, 2GB of storage, and 3 AI photo restorations — enough to get started and preserve what matters most. Paid Family ($4.99/month) and Legacy Pro ($9.99/month) plans add future messages, unlimited storage, AI research, and more. No credit card is required to sign up.
How is MyLegacySpace different from Ancestry.com?
Ancestry focuses on researching ancestors who have already passed. MyLegacySpace does that too — but we are also the only platform that lets you record and schedule messages for family members who aren't born yet. We preserve the past, document the present, and send your words into the future. And we're a fraction of the price.
What is the difference between the Family and Legacy Pro plans?
Family ($4.99/month) covers most households: 15GB storage, 10 future messages/month, 10 AI restorations/month, and Legacy Links for connecting to relatives' trees. Legacy Pro ($9.99/month) adds unlimited storage, an AI research agent that finds new ancestors for you, all tree view types, priority support, and a custom memorial URL.
Can I cancel my subscription anytime?
Yes. Cancel with one click from your account settings. You keep full access until the end of the current billing period, then your account reverts to Free. No cancellation fees, no retention calls.

Account

How do I delete my account?
Open your account settings and choose "Delete Account." You will have 30 days to restore the account if you change your mind. After that window, all of your data is permanently deleted from our systems. Before deleting, we recommend exporting your family tree as a GEDCOM file so you have a copy.
Someone else created a memorial for my relative. Can I claim it?
Yes. If you are a family member with a rightful claim to a memorial page or family profile, you can submit a claim request through the page itself. The current owner (or our support team, if the page is unowned) will review and transfer ownership.
